AQUATIC CENTER LIFEGUARDS

 

Summer '08


The Georgia Tech Aquatic Center is an Ellis & Associates Lifeguard facility. The lifeguard staff is required to hold the E&A certification and attend in-services where guards work on skills such as backboarding, active/passive victim rescues, and many team-building games and activities. Lifeguards are also required to swim a weekly workout. Lifeguard applications are taken year round, and hiring usually occurs at the beginning of each semester.

 

 

Lifeguard Certification Courses

 

Full Course: For those who are not currently certified or have never taken the certification course.


Prerequisites: For Pool Lifeguard – tested first night of class. Swim continuous crawl or breaststroke – 100 yards Feet first surface dive, retrieve 10 lb. brick, bring to surface from 8’ depth Tread water without using arms for 1 minute (rotary kicked preferred)

Cost: ($100 - includes book, certification includes FA and CPR)

Registration: Beginning April 2, 2007, register through the Campus Recreation G.I.T FIT Program – at the CRC Member Services desk. Pay by check, credit card, or payroll deduction.

Important Class Information:

- All classes will be held in room 134
- Book will be handed out first day of class
- Bring a pen and/or pencil each day
- Bring a swimming suit and towel each day – you will be very active while learning skills in the water, so wear an appropriate swim suit
- Extra towel and a change of clothes - we do get in and out of the pool more than once in a day, come prepared.

     


Cross-over Course: This course is for those currently certified in American Red Cross or the YMCA.

- Bring original certification cards to first night of class, skills will be checked first night of class to determine if full course is needed.
- Cost and registration dates are the same as full course.
- Come first night of regular scheduled class.
- Bring a swim suit, towel and change of clothes.

Qualifications:

Education: Must hold a current Ellis & Associates Lifeguard/CPR/FA license.

Experience: Previous experience in some phase of swimming pool work is preferred. Must have excellent swimming skills, plus skills in rescue techniques and procedures, first aid application and CPR.

Knowledge: Must have a thorough understanding of preventative lifeguarding, current rescue techniques and procedures, first aid application and CPR.

General: Must be in good physical and mental condition and maintain professional work-related practices-safety, alertness, dependability, responsibility, initiative, tact, courteousness, common sense, good judgment, cleanliness, endurance and the ability to work with all ages.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • To prevent accidents and eliminate or minimize hazardous situations.
  • To respond quickly to all emergency situations and administer first aid as needed.
  • To communicate to other lifeguards and facility staff the need for additional assistance or equipment in an emergency.
  • To observe and enforce all rules and regulations of the facility.
  • To educate and inform patrons of the rules and regulations as necessary.
  • To complete all required reports and records on schedule and to submit them to the proper person or office.
  • To maintain a complete, safe and sanitary facility.
  • To attend training sessions and staff meetings as scheduled.
  • To complete required weekly workout of designated skills
  • To carry out all additional duties assigned by the Lead Guard, Head Guard, or Aquatics Director.
  • To conduct oneself in a professional manner.
