Sprinkler System Incident Causes Water Damage to the CRC

On Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at approximately 10:30 p.m., a basketball was kicked into the sprinkler system during a pick-up game on the fourth-floor gymnasium at the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center. The basketball caused the sprinkler head to break and activate the fire alarm. The building was evacuated and the Atlanta Fire Department and Georgia Tech Police arrived soon after.

Water flooded from the sprinkler at a rate of 65 gallons per minute for approximately 20 minutes, flooding court number six and studio C on the fourth floor. Water continued to seep down into the flooring system and leak into the competition pool of the Aquatic Center . Significant damage was done to the acoustical spray in the Aquatic Center ceiling as well as the hardwood flooring of the gymnasium.

Due to the damage to the fire suppressant system, the Campus Recreation Center remained closed on Wednesday, March 1, 2006 until 4:00 p.m. At this time, the life safety equipment was operational and certified by the fire marshal.

Georgia Tech Facilities Department is spearheading the repairs to the CRC. Major repairs to the building are already underway. Currently, courts five and six are closed, as is studio C. Part of the competition pool has been covered, so lane space is limited at this time.

All operational hours, program schedules, and reservations are undergoing adjustments. The staff of the CRC would like to ask for flexibility and patience from all of our patrons during the repair of the building. Hours, schedules, and location of programs may change daily due to space limitations and repairs. Visit www.crc.gatech.edu for all updates and changes to the CRC schedule.
